Things to do in Phu Quoc when it rains — indoor activities and rainy day tips

Rain in Phu Quoc is rarely an all-day affair — showers tend to come in the afternoon and clear within a few hours. But even on grey days, there is plenty to do. Here are 12 genuinely good options for when the beach isn't calling.

Good to know: Rain rarely cancels the Sunset Town night market or the evening fireworks. Grab a poncho and still go.

Traditional Vietnamese Massage

There are several good massage parlours in An Thoi and more in Duong Dong. A full-body 60-minute traditional massage costs 200,000–350,000 VND. Hot stone massage, herbal compress, and foot reflexology are also widely available. Book on the same day — walk-ins are usually welcome.

Phu Quoc Cooking Class

Several restaurants offer morning cooking classes where you learn to make local dishes — bánh khọt, fresh spring rolls, bún quậy. Classes typically run 2.5–3 hours and include a market visit and a sit-down lunch of what you made. Ask at our reception for the current best option in An Thoi.

Free–50,000 VND

Fish Sauce Factory Tour

Phu Quoc's famous fish sauce is made in large wooden barrel facilities near Duong Dong (30 min north). Khai Hoan and Hung Thinh both offer free or low-cost tours. You'll see the barrels — some holding 10,000+ litres — smell the fermentation, and sample different grades. It's genuinely fascinating and a great story to take home.

Phu Quoc Prison Museum (Coconut Tree Prison)

The Phu Quoc Prison (Nhà Tù Phú Quốc) is a sobering but important museum documenting the island's history as a wartime detention centre. Well-maintained and informative. Located in An Thoi — within walking distance or a short scooter ride from our hotel. Allow 1–2 hours.

An Thoi Morning Market Browse

Rain makes the covered market stalls of An Thoi even more appealing. The indoor section stocks fresh tropical fruit, dried seafood, Phu Quoc pepper, and local handicrafts. Go between 6–9 AM for the best selection. This is also a great place to buy sim wine, pepper sets, and fish sauce as gifts.

Free–200,000 VND

Visit a Pepper Farm

Phu Quoc pepper is considered among the finest in the world. Several pepper farms north of Duong Dong welcome visitors — Phu Quoc Pepper Estate is the most accessible. The farm is partly covered, making it a good rainy-day option. Buy fresh or dried pepper directly from the source.

100,000–400,000 VND

Vinpearl Safari & Conservation Park

Phu Quoc's open-concept safari park is partially covered. Animals roam in large naturalistic enclosures. It's legitimately impressive by regional standards. About 25 km north of An Thoi (35 minutes). A good half-day option for families or wildlife lovers on a grey day.

Dinh Cau Temple & Rock Cape

The Dinh Cau lighthouse temple sits on a small rocky promontory at the entrance to Duong Dong harbour. The walk up is dramatic in stormy weather — waves crash dramatically against the rocks. The temple itself is small but beautifully situated. 30 minutes north of An Thoi.

10
300,000–600,000 VND for two

Long Lunch at a Seafood Restaurant

Rain is the perfect excuse for a long, lazy seafood lunch. Order whole fish, grilled squid, and tiger prawns at one of the covered restaurants along the An Thoi waterfront. Order slowly, eat everything, watch the rain fall on the harbour. No itinerary required.

11
80,000–150,000 VND

Sunset Town Night Market (Rain-Proof)

The An Thoi night market has large awnings over most stalls and covered walkways. A little rain doesn't stop it. This is also when it's least crowded — locals carry on regardless. Great grilled food, cold beer, and fireworks still happen even in light rain.

Watch the Waterfalls

The island's waterfalls — Suoi Tranh and Suoi Da Ban — are at their most impressive during or after rain. The water flow is dramatically higher and the surrounding jungle is vivid green. Best visited in the morning, before the afternoon rains begin, during the wet season (May–October).
