Phu Quoc is unusually versatile. It genuinely works for families with toddlers, honeymooning couples who want quiet romance, and backpackers stretching a $30-a-day budget. The experience, though, looks different depending on how you approach it. Here's a tailored guide for each travel style.
Phu Quoc with Kids
FamiliesPhu Quoc is one of the most family-friendly beach destinations in Southeast Asia — and it's genuinely suitable for children of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers. The beaches in the south are calm and shallow (perfect for small children), and there are dedicated family attractions across the island.
Best beaches for families
Bai Khem (5 minutes from An Thoi) is the top recommendation for families with young children. The water is warm, shallow (knee-deep for 50+ metres in low tide), and calm. There's natural shade from casuarina trees at the northern end. Bai Sao is also good for families — slightly further but with more facilities.
Kid-friendly activities
- Vinpearl Safari: One of the best open-concept safari parks in Southeast Asia. Animals roam freely in large enclosures. Children under 100 cm enter free. Allow a full day.
- Hon Thom Cable Car: Kids love the 15-minute cable car crossing over the sea. The island on the other side has a water park (Aquatopia) with slides and pools.
- Island snorkelling: For children aged 6 and above, the southern archipelago snorkel tours are manageable and exciting. The water is warm and clear; life jackets are provided.
- Night market fireworks: The daily Sunset Town fireworks are a highlight for children. Visible from near the hotel, free to watch, and reliably spectacular.
Practical family notes
- Grab works well for getting around with young children who can't be on scooters.
- Baby supplies (nappies, formula, wipes) are available at VinMart and Co.op Mart in Duong Dong.
- Most restaurants in An Thoi and Sunset Town are informal and welcoming to children.
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ is essential — the Phu Quoc sun is strong even in cloudy weather.
Phu Quoc for Couples
RomancePhu Quoc has an almost unfair advantage for couples: evening fireworks over the sea, golden sunsets that last 40 minutes, and enough boutique accommodation and candlelit restaurants to fill a honeymoon. The south of the island — around An Thoi — has a quieter, more intimate feel than the resort-heavy north.
Romantic highlights
- Executive Suite firework view: Our top-floor Executive Suite has a private balcony with a direct view of the nightly Sunset Town fireworks. Champagne optional.
- Sunset Town at dusk: Walk to the waterfront 30 minutes before sunset. The light over the strait is extraordinary. The fireworks follow after dark.
- Private island snorkel: Charter a private boat through the hotel for a half-day trip to the southern islands with just the two of you. We'll pack a picnic.
- Couples massage: Side-by-side 90-minute traditional massage at a local spa. Book through reception — we work with trusted therapists.
- Cable car sunset: The Hon Thom cable car at golden hour is genuinely dreamy. Book the last crossing of the day for the best light.
Best restaurants for a date night in An Thoi
The waterfront restaurants in Sunset Town are naturally romantic — plastic chairs, string lights, fresh seafood, and the sound of waves. For something more refined, the resort restaurants at nearby JW Marriott Phu Quoc are a 10-minute drive and take reservations.
Phu Quoc for Backpackers
Budget TravelPhu Quoc is more affordable than its reputation suggests, especially if you stay in the south and eat locally. A comfortable daily budget of $25–40 USD is realistic for a solo backpacker: accommodation (500,000–900,000 VND), food (150,000–300,000 VND), and transport (scooter: 150,000 VND/day).
Budget tips
- Eat at the An Thoi market: Full seafood meal for two for 250,000–400,000 VND. Better food than most restaurants at a third of the price.
- Rent a scooter, not a car: 150,000–200,000 VND/day gives you total island freedom. We rent bikes with no passport hold.
- Book the shoulder season: May–June and September–October offer 30–50% lower accommodation rates. Weather is fine in May–June.
- Island hopping on group tours: Join a shared snorkelling tour instead of chartering — 250,000–350,000 VND vs 1,500,000+ for private.
- Buy a Vietnamese SIM card: 200,000–300,000 VND for a month of unlimited data. Essential for Grab and navigation.
Is Phu Quoc backpacker-friendly?
Increasingly yes — the south especially. An Thoi has local restaurants, affordable street food, and no entrance fees for the beaches. The island doesn't yet have the hostel infrastructure of Hanoi or Da Nang, but boutique guesthouses and small hotels like ours offer comfortable rooms at budget-friendly rates, especially for longer stays (30% off for 30+ nights).
